How to Control Shine

Healthy, glowing skin is always in. However, blindingly shiny or greasy skin usually isn’t as attractive. Unfortunately for some of us, the heat and humidity can turn our usually dewy complexions into a bit of a shiny mess. The good news is that there are some tricks you can use to keep your skin looking a little less shiny without drying it out. The key to this is using the right products and looking for the right ingredients. Follow these tips to keep your skin looking flawless all summer long.

  1. Rethink your cleansing routine.
Thanks to their ingredients, some anti-acne products can be great for preventing shine, whether you break out or not. Ingredients like salicylic acid gently exfoliate your skin which helps break down excess oil, keeping your skin clear and shine-free from the start.
Try: SkinMedica Purifying Foaming Wash. This instant foaming wash deep cleanses your pores while soothing your skin and balancing oil production.
  2. Don’t give up on sunscreen.
People with oily skin often avoid using sunscreen because they are afraid it will make their skin look even oilier. While this can be true of heavier products, many sunscreens around today are formulated specifically for oily skin and contain ingredients that will actually absorb oil and mattify while protecting from the sun.
Try: Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15. The SPF 15 in this sunscreen provides just enough protection for day-to-day activities, while Murad’s Oil-Control Complex reduces oil for up to 8 hours.
  3. Rethink your moisturizer.
Moisturizing is still important, especially if you have combination skin. If your skin gets too dry or dehydrated, it can over-compensate by producing even more oil. Choose a lightweight moisturizer or serum with ingredients that will keep your skin’s oil production in check while hydrating dry areas. You don’t need to apply moisturizer to your whole face, just focus on drier parts such as the cheeks and avoid putting too much on your forehead, nose, or chin, which tend to be the shiniest.
Try: Phytomer OligoPur Hydra Matifying Control Cream. The algae extracts in this cream detoxify and an advanced marine water concentrate soothes for a velvety finish.
  4. Put on a mask.
Once or twice a week (depending on your skin type), throw on a purifying mask to clear out all of the excess oil, dirt, pollution, or anything else that can clog your pores. Choose a clay-based mask that will draw out impurities and leave you with soft, clean, radiant skin.
Try: Lierac Purifying Mask. This mask contains green clay, kaolin, star anise, and lime extracts to deep cleanse, tighten pores, and mattify normal to combination skin.
  5. Touch up during the day.
Nix any shine that has managed to break through without ruining your makeup. Try applying a translucent pressed powder with a big fluffy brush to instantly mattify your skin as well as blur any imperfections. For those of you who are a little low maintenance, try blotting papers. These will absorb excess oil and leave you shine-free.
Try: Jane Iredale Facial Blotting Papers and Compact. Made of flaxseed, these natural papers come in a compact gold case and make it easy to control shine on the go.
