How to Treat Sunburned Skin

The sun’s out, and whether you are enjoying a mild European summer, or racing around trying to avoid unintentional sunburn in the Gulf, you will probably be exposed to the sun at some point this season. And, despite our best efforts, sometimes even the best of us slip up and forget to apply sunscreen. It may be hard to completely avoid sun burns or cumulative sun damage, but the good news is that there are things that you can do that will minimize the damage and repair your skin after a long, hot summer. Here are our tips for repairing your skin after sun exposure.

  1. Soothe and cool your skin. Sunburn can cause your skin to feel warm and even swollen, so one of the first things you want to do is bring down swelling and cool the surface of your skin. Try taking a nice, cool bath to bring your skin temperature down and soothe any irritation. A capful of Elemis Skin Nourishing Milk Bath will hydrate your skin and keep it supple while you cool down.
  2. Treat dryness. Dry, peeling skin is one of the most irritating effects of a sunburn. Peeling occurs after a sunburn because your body is trying to remove the damaged skin cells in order to make way for healthy ones. Soothing and moisturizing your skin will help keep peeling to a minimum. Lierac Sunific After Sun Ultra Refreshing Balm is a rich balm that contains mimosa tenuiflora, coconut oil and calendula to soothe any irritation or itchiness, as well as deeply moisturize and nourish the skin. It can be used on the face and body.
  3. Nix any redness. Pink or red skin is a telltale sign of too much time in the sun. An easy way to neutralize any redness is by using a green color corrector. Green and red are on opposite ends of the color wheel, which means they neutralize each other when placed on top of each other. Applying a cream with a light green tint, like Dermalogica Redness Relief SPF20 will reduce any redness and give your skin a healthy appearance.
  4. Prevent any sun damage. Excessive sun exposure can lead to wrinkles or hyperpigmentation. If you are prone to them, it is important to stop them in their tracks before they can develop. A Vitamin-C rich product will minimize sun damage and prevent premature aging and hyperpigmentation. Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Hydra-Pure Vitamin C Brightening Serum is a night-time treatment that will fight wrinkles, sun spots, and dullness while you sleep.
