Curly Hair Tips

Whether you have Shirley Temple ringlets, or Gisele Bundchen waves, you probably know how frustrating it can be to deal with curly hair. Curly hair can be incredibly beautiful, but due to the nature of curls, it can also require a little more attention than other hair types.

Curly hair appears in a variety of textures and curl patterns, from tight corkscrew curls to loose waves. However, despite the type of curl, most people with curly hair find that their hair is drier than their straight-haired counterparts. This is because the curls make it harder for the scalp’s natural oils to travel down the hair strand and moisturize the hair. Curly hair may look tougher than straight hair, but in reality, curly hair is actually quite fragile and must be handled with care to avoid breakage or split ends. Curly hair is also more porous than straight hair, meaning it absorbs more moisture which can make it more prone to frizzing in the heat and humidity.

While it may seem like curly hair can be too much to handle, there are a few very simple tricks you can use to keep your curls looking beautiful, bouncy, and frizz free.

  1. Choose the right shampoo. Because curly hair is already prone to dryness, it’s important to avoid washing your hair too often. Stick to washing two or three times a week, and make sure you choose a shampoo that will cleanse your locks without over-drying them. Try a gentle shampoo like Philip B African Shea Butter Gentle & Conditioning Shampoo. This shampoo gently cleanses while strengthening strands and balancing your hair and scalp’s pH.
  2. Don’t over-condition your curls. While curly hair definitely needs more nourishment and moisture than other hair types, using a conditioner that is too heavy will weigh down your curls, which can make them lay flat and appear lifeless. Use a deep conditioner that will hydrate your curls without weighing them down. Rahua Omega 9 Hair Mask is rich in natural oils that will instantly absorb into and nourish your hair, leaving you with shiny, healthy, bouncy curls.
  3. Define your curls. Use a curl enhancer to define your curls and ensure they last all day. A styling cream will keep your curls hydrated while reducing flyaways and keeping frizz at bay. For even more definition, apply the cream to wet hair and twirl individual curls around your fingers before air drying. Philip B. Oud Royal Mega-Curl Enhance will keep your curls and waves intact while nourishing your strands.
  4. Straighten sensibly. If you really want to wear your hair straight, make sure you apply a heat protectant before blowdrying to protect your hair from damage. Phyto Phytodefrisant Straightening Balm is a heat-activated straightening balm that will smooth unruly hair and lock in moisture and shine.
