Toners are probably one of the most misunderstood beauty products around. When are you supposed to use them? How are you supposed to use them? And most importantly, why should you use a toner?
To tell you the truth, up until recently, I felt toner was an unnecessary step in my already long skincare routine. When I thought of toners, I thought of the super strong, astringents that I used in my teens. And believe me, there’s no way I’d use one of those today! Thankfully, we’ve come a pretty long way since those days, and today’s toners are much less likely to burn off the top layer of your skin.
Toners are products that are to be used after cleansing, they can be applied to the skin with a cotton pad or even spritzed directly onto the skin. Toners were originally used to restore the skin’s natural pH after cleansing, but today, toners come with a whole array of wonderful ingredients for every skin type, and can even be considered a treatment in themselves. Toners can get rid of any leftover traces of makeup, they can act as humectants and moisturize the skin, and they can even help fade hyperpigmentation. Think of them as a tiny step that can make a big difference.
If you’d like to add a toner to your routine (and I highly recommend it) I’ve put together a list of toners for every skin type.
For Dry skin, Athena Lab Hydration Tonic – Gives your skin an added boost of moisture thanks to its super hydrating jojoba and argan oils. It also contains hyaluronic acid, an ingredient that draws moisture from the environment and binds it to your skin, hydrating it and plumping it up.
For Combination skin, Bliss Daily Detoxifying Facial Toner – This toner will hydrate dry areas while detoxifying and clarifying oily or acne-prone areas. It also contains plant extracts to protect the skin from the daily environmental damages.
For Acne-prone skin, SkinMedica Purifying Toner – The super Acne-fighter salicylic acid, the tea tree oil and the willow bark extract combine to unclog your pores and treat your breakouts, without irritating the skin. Use this toner two to three times a day to fight breakouts, minimize pores and reduce excess oil production.
For Sensitive skin, Aromatherapy Associates Soothing Skin Tonic – Hydrate, balance and soothe sensitive skin with this calming toner. Roman Chamomile is one of Mother Nature’s most soothing ingredients and it is combined with arnica and liquorice root to instantly reduce any inflammation or irritation. Try keeping this one in the fridge and use it after the beach to calm a sunburned skin.
For Normal skin, Dr. Hauschka Facial Toner – If your have normal skin, lucky you! Keep it in great shape by using a daily facial toner like this one, which contains refining witch hazel and anthyllis that promotes healing. You can spritz this on your face throughout the day anytime you need to refresh your skin and makeup.
