Dealing with Adult Acne

Being an adult has a lot of perks; the job we’ve always dreamed of, a great car, lots of travel, possibly even the opportunity to start our own family. But it can also bring about something that a lot of us aren’t expecting: Adult Acne. Yep, those pesky little spots and pimples from our teenage years somehow manage to pop back up for a visit. Let’s face it; a giant pimple is probably the last thing you want to see before a big presentation!

Adult acne poses the same challenges that teenage acne does, except that you may now find that your skin is a little drier and more sensitive than it was in your teens, making it slightly more difficult to treat breakouts without irritating your skin.

Breakouts in adults are formed the same was as in teenagers. Excess sebum production clogs pores, leading to pimples when bacteria decide to join the party.  The most common causes of adult acne are hormonal imbalances, stress, certain medications, even using old cosmetics (it’s time to clear out that makeup bag, ladies!)

Luckily, we have a whole adult acne-fighting arsenal in our bag of tricks. Here are some of our favorite products that are strong enough to fight acne, but won’t irritate or dry out your skin.

Jan Marini Bioglycolic Face Cleanser – this cleanser contains exfoliating glycolic acid in a gentle, hydrating base. It will deep cleanse your skin without stripping it.

Murad Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel – use a light layer of this gel all over your face to clarify your skin, unclog pores and get rid of stubborn pimples.

Lexli Aloe-Based Acne Moisturizer with Sunblock – this moisturizer will hydrate your skin without clogging your pores and will protect your skin from the environment. The added sunblock will also protect your skin from the sun, minimizing any chances of acne scarring.

If the breakouts don’t stop, it might be time to visit your dermatologist. He or she will be able to prescribe oral medication to get you on your way to clear skin.
